5G radiation from smartphones is dangerous!
Written by: Harthi

Introduction
With the uprise of digital technology, we find it harder to keep to ourselves and not fall into the digital trap of addiction. Addicted to buying the latest technology, keeping up with the latest digital trends and not to forget, getting addicted to our smartphones. Smartphone addiction is common amongst the youngsters in this digital age. Parents often lecture their children on this, but what if there is a certain truth to it all? Should we be worried about the 5G radiation emitted from smartphones? Is it dangerous? And should we ultimately throw our phones away and crawl into caves?
What is 5G Radiation?
Smartphones use 5G which is a wireless technology to transmit data at high speed. 5G produces electromagnetic radiation –what people commonly refer to when they say 5G radiation– at a high frequency making it faster and more efficient. 5G radiation from your smartphones, is a form of microwave radiation which lies on the electromagnetic spectrum. This type of radiation is known as ‘non-ionizing radiation’ which basically means it does not have the capability to break or damage chemical bonds. In fact, 5G radiation can barely penetrate your skin to cause damage or potentially cancer. It’s important to note that radiation is not the same as radioactivity although the two terms are related to a certain extent. You can read more about the differences in those terms here.

Radiation from smartphones and our health
Although there have been several studies carried out pertaining to this matter, there is still limited knowledge. There were 2 famous studies linking the use of smartphones to cancer, one was carried out in 2010 and the other in 2018, however the results from these tests we inconclusive as one highly relied on the subjective memory of its participants and the other was only tested on rodents with the use of high amounts of radiofrequency.
A recent study in 2021 investigated the “Age-dependence of electromagnetic power and heat deposition in near-surface tissues in emerging 5G bands”. This study showed that older people experienced more electromagnetic-field (EMF) related tissue heating compared to younger people. However, this study mentioned that the validation of its results needed more realistic models which were out of the scope of its studies.
There are certain individuals who claims to experience negative side effects from prolonged smartphone usage, however, there were studies carried out, which showed that these people may be experiencing what is known as the Nocebo Effect. Participants may have a fixed mindset that smartphone radiation causes them harm, and that is what brings them to experience these negative side effects such as fatigue, headaches, and insomnia.
Statement from WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO), states there are no adverse health effects which have been linked with exposure to wireless technologies. Limited studies have been carried out using the 5G frequency, hence there is not enough evidence that there are major health effects due to 5G radiation.
As of now tissue heating poses a health effect, however as long as the overall exposure remains below international guidelines, there should be nothing to worry about. WHO is conducting a health risk assessment covering the entire radiofrequency range, including 5G. This assessment will be published in 2022, so if you’re interested in that do stay updated with WHO.
Okay, so should you ditch your smartphones?

To conclude no, you do not need to ditch your smartphones to be safe. The baseline is, 5G technology is very new, and there have not been enough studies to prove that it will cause permanent damage to us humans. Most of the studies carried out to prove otherwise have inconsistent results or were not carried out in the long-term to prove that 5G radiation is dangerous to humans. If there were immediate effects, recent studies would have proved so, and we would be certain of them by now. So, when someone tells you that 5G radiation from smartphones is dangerous, you can tell that it’s false and unproven.
